Benne Berlin Celebrates One Year of Bringing Bengaluru to Berlin

On June 11, Benne Berlin celebrated its first anniversary with an evening that was far more than a birthday party. It was a journey home.

ಹಳ್ಳಿ ಊಟ

For one special night, founders Sphatika and Bhavya invited guests to experience the food, memories, and traditions that shaped their childhoods in Bengaluru. Through a carefully curated menu inspired by Karnataka's culinary heritage, they transformed dinner into a story—one told through aromas, textures, and shared memories.

A Year of Sharing South Indian Culture

When Benne opened its doors in Berlin one year ago, it was founded on a simple belief: South Indian food deserves to be understood, not just eaten.

While Indian cuisine is often represented abroad through familiar northern dishes, Benne set out to showcase the rich culinary traditions of Karnataka and Bengaluru. Over the past year, the restaurant has introduced guests to flavors, techniques, and stories rarely found outside South India, creating a space where food becomes a gateway to culture.

The anniversary celebration reflected that mission perfectly.

A Feast Inspired by the Village Table

At the center of the evening was the Halli Oota, a traditional village-style meal served on a banana leaf. Guests were welcomed with a signature plate featuring nine dishes surrounding a brass diya, symbolizing warmth, hospitality, and togetherness.

Each dish carried its own story.

The meal began with Akki Rotti, Bengaluru's beloved rice flatbread, accompanied by three traditional chutneys. Methi Chapathi followed, highlighting the Karnataka kitchen's appreciation for balance and complexity.

Biryani Rice served as the foundation of the meal, complemented by a selection of curries that reflected both everyday life and special family gatherings. The Bendi Aloo Curry celebrated the humble ingredients that define home cooking, while the optional Chicken or Mutton Curry paid tribute to the famous Sunday pot that brought families together across Bengaluru every week.

For vegetarian guests, Aloo Mutter and Mushroom Curry showcased a culinary tradition where vegetable dishes are never an alternative but often the centerpiece.

No South Indian meal would be complete without Rasam, the beloved tamarind and pepper broth that generations have relied on for comfort, healing, and nourishment.

The evening concluded with traditional Buttermilk and Gulab Jamun—a sweet ending that, in many South Indian homes, symbolizes care, gratitude, and hospitality.

Every Dish Tells a Story

What made the anniversary dinner unique was the way each course was presented. Rather than simply describing ingredients, the menu invited guests into the memories behind the food.

The crackle of mustard seeds in hot oil. The aroma of curry leaves picked fresh from a neighbor's garden. The scent of a Sunday curry filling an entire apartment building before breakfast. These were not just culinary details; they were fragments of childhood, family life, and cultural identity.

For Sphatika and Bhavya, the goal was not to recreate an idea of Bengaluru, but to share the feeling of it.

Thank You for the First Year

At the end of the evening, the founders expressed their gratitude to everyone who has supported Benne throughout its first year.

Every guest, every conversation, and every shared meal has contributed to the restaurant's journey. What began as a vision to introduce authentic South Indian cuisine to Berlin has grown into a community of curious diners eager to discover the stories behind the food.

As Benne enters its second year, its mission remains unchanged: to celebrate the traditions of Karnataka, honor the memories that inspire every recipe, and continue creating meaningful connections around the table.

Because, as the anniversary dinner beautifully demonstrated, the best meals are not only about what is served. They are about where the food comes from, the people who prepare it, and the stories that bring everyone together.

Here's to the next chapter of Benne Berlin.
