Benne Berlin was born from a simple but powerful idea: to bring the vibrant flavors of South India to the heart of Germany's capital. Rooted in tradition and inspired by the culinary diversity of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh, the restaurant set out to offer Berlin something it had never quite tasted before — the authentic soul of the South Indian table.
The Name
The name Benne comes from Kannada, the language of Karnataka, where it simply means butter. In Karnataka, benne is the heart of the beloved benne dosa — a generously buttered, crispy-edged creation born in the Davangere region, a staple of the small neighbourhood eateries, or darshinis, that line Bangalore's bustling streets. Choosing this name was a tribute to that humble, joyful food culture — unpretentious, generous, and deeply satisfying.
